Bank transfer fraud
You made a bank transfer and now believe the person or company was not genuine. This page explains what to do next.
Immediate action
Contact your bank immediately using the number on the back of your card or in your banking app. Ask them to stop or recall the payment.
Overview
Authorised push payment (APP) fraud happens when someone persuades you to transfer money from your own account. Because you authorised the payment yourself, it can feel as though nothing can be done — but UK banks operate a reimbursement framework and speed matters.
Common warning signs
- Pressure to move money quickly
- A request to move money to a 'safe account'
- Payment details changed at the last minute
- You were told to keep the payment private
What to do now
- 1Contact your bank using its official number
- 2Ask your bank to attempt a recall
- 3Change online banking passwords from a device you trust
- 4Write down what happened while it is fresh
Evidence to preserve
- Bank statements showing the payments
- Any correspondence with your bank
- Chats, emails or texts with the other party
- Screenshots of websites or profiles
- Payment confirmations and receipts
Where to report
- Your bank's fraud team
- Action Fraud (or Police Scotland in Scotland)
- The Financial Ombudsman Service if your bank rejects your complaint
Fraud Victim Support does not replace an official police report.
What happens next
We will help you understand the steps involved, what your bank is likely to ask for, and which organisations to contact. Timescales depend on your bank and the circumstances.
Optional legal support
Some situations may also benefit from a separate legal or complaints-based assessment. This is entirely optional and separate from the free support we provide.
You are never required to instruct AY-Legal in order to receive initial support.
Questions people ask
- Can my bank get the money back?
- That depends on the circumstances, how quickly the payment is reported and whether funds remain. Nobody can promise a particular outcome.
- Is it too late to report?
- Reporting is still worthwhile even after time has passed.
